Annual Dinner Time!

Just one table of happy Volkseaters, err, Volksmarchers at 2018’s Annual Dinner

is the location of our 2020 annual dinner on Saturday, January 18. Social time begins at 5:30 p.m. and the dinner meeting is at 6:00. The restaurant is located at 5022 S 108th St (108th & Q) in Omaha. Cost is $15 for members, $20 for nonmembers and includes drink, tax and tip. Please mail your check by January 10 to NWFT, PO Box 8147, Omaha NE 68108.

Our club officers for 2020 will be installed and the 2019 “Walker of the Year” will be announced during the meeting portion.

SOUP WALK – ADDRESS CORRECTION

The folks at Children’s Square pointed out that we typed in the wrong address for this event. The CORRECT ADDRESS to go to is: 500 North 7th Street. The building we will meet in the the Lemen Visitor Center, it is the one with the steeple on top. This is just north of the red tent.
This will be the address with the soup, cake and fun! ?

May 12th Walk – Bird Seeds to Trails

A reminder that there is road construction that may affect how you will get to Wild Bird Habitat at 16919 Audrey St #120, Omaha, NE 68136.  Harrison Street is closed west of 168th Street.  Come from the north or the south on 168th Street (south of Zorinsky Lake, north of Wehrspann Lake) or come east on Harrison to get there between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m.  Walkers must be off the trail by 2 p.m., but don’t worry, the store will be open for you to browse after the walk!

Dogs, kids and strollers are welcome on the walk, although dogs are not allowed in the building.  Fun Walkers pay $1.50; Credit Walkers pay $3.00.  

Comments from our Workers’ Walk a couple of weeks ago were very positive and they’re sure you’ll enjoy the route as much as they did.  See you Saturday!

Since we have a number of new members this year, I want to remind all that there is no regular meeting in August – we will Not meet this evening, Monday, August 7.

Also, due to Labor Day, our meeting in September is always the second Monday – so this year it will be September 11, 7:00 p.m. at Morning Star Lutheran Church.

PS: for those that read the first newsletter of the year, you may remember my challenge to increase the numbers on our own Year Round walking Events (YRE).

Do 50 NWFT YRE walks and I will personally pay your 2018 dues. Thanks to Butch Spaulding, who loves to crunch numbers, it looks like Diane Fenlon is in the lead.

What we’ve done – and what we’re going to do! (August news and Fall 2016 preview)

We had 26 people at our Hanscom Park/Ford Birthsite walk on August 13th and another 26 people at our tour of the Union Pacific Museum.  What a great turnout! We hope to see you at one of these upcoming events, Note that some of these involve traveling outside of our area – make your overnight stay reservations NOW!  Let us know if you need a ride to any of these.

September 16th – 17th – Prairie Wanderers Club in SD hosts 5 walks in Huron and Mitchell over 2 days. Possible carpooling to those events; will require an overnight stay. Let us know if you are interested.
September 24th – Ogallala “Indian Summer Rendezvous”.  Registration from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.
September 25th –October event prewalk at 4 p.m.  Parking for the prewalk will be the overflow lot just south of the Playhouse parking.  (There is a play that evening).
October 1st – Omaha Community Playhouse – a Traditional Event.  Registration from 9:30 a.m. to 12 (Doors do not open until 9:30) 
October 15th – Shelby, IA Group Walk (Meet and Eat) – details to be announced later.  The Corn Crib is the designated restaurant.
October 29th – Lincoln Wyuka Walk – a Traditional Event.  Our club encourages you to go, but will not be organizing formal carpools to this event.
November  5th – New Cassel (Omaha) – a Traditional Event.  Registration 9-12.   Group walk at 9:30.  There is no kitchen or refrigerator for this event.  If you bring a cream pie, please provide cooler or some way of preserving it.
November 19th – Council Bluffs Group Walk (Meet and Eat).  Eat at Lansky’s after.  Time will be published as it is organized.
December 3rd – Lights Walk – a Traditional Event.  Registration from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.??  (Details being finalized) Will announce later a time for those interested in walking as a group.
December 17th – Kansas City Plaza Lights Walk (Meet and Eat).  Carpools would leave in the early afternoon, to arrive around 4 p.m. Details to be announced later.  Westroads Mall alternate walking site if roads are icy.

February News from AVA Headquarters

Each month, AVA Headquarters publishes a newsletter called “The Checkpoint”, with contents generally aimed at club officers across the country. AVA’s Executive Director, Henry Rosales, wants to make the news more accessible and available to all walkers across the country, not just club officers.  This month, all of us are invited to request email delivery of “The Checkpoint” directly to our own email inboxes.  See how in here (at the bottom):  February 2016 Checkpoint

There’s also information in this month’s “Checkpoint” about changes in Special Programs, what the Strategic Planning Committee has been up to (our own Jeanne Miller represents the North Central region!), 40th Anniversary celebrations for the AVA in June in Texas and lastly, a request for feedback on a DBA for the American Volkssport Association: “America’s Walking Club”.

Our club has been fantastic about sharing information from AVA Headquarters over the past few years, and we really appreciate past and present club leadership for keeping us involved and informed!

 

Two things to do for October!


First – come to the South Omaha Walk being held October 3rd at El Museo Latino. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Please register from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. If you can’t be back tIowa border sign on South Omaha walko the museum by 1, the folks at our THIRD checkpoint will be happy to take your Start Cards for you. Lots to see, plenty to eat and 130 years of history await you! Oh – and for you folks doing Border Crossings, here’s a sun-washed photo of the sign welcoming you to Iowa on the 10k route. Got to walk to get a better look!

The other thing you have to do in October is to take AVA’s Individual Stakeholder Survey. Click here to take the AVA Individual Stakeholder Survey.  Your opinions and input will shape the future of the American Volkssport Association!

Our hard-working Regional Director Phyllis Olson is handing over the reins to Jerry Wilson as of July 1st, but not before sending us lots and lots of news! Club President Mel sent all of this via email, so it may be old news to you. Do take a look at the other walks in our region, so that if your travels take you nearby, you can add a walk to your itinerary.
